TSA means business with the 3-1-1 Rule.

For nearly 20 years, the 3-1-1 rule has been used to protect against terrorists. Introduced in 2006, 3-1-1 limits all liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags to be in containers of 3.4 fluid ounces (100 milliliters) or smaller. The containers must fit into a single, clear quart-size bag. Only one bag is allowed per passenger.

Because the TSA can now accurately analyze the contents of liquids using new CT scanners without needing to limit the size, the rules are about to change. The airports in the country leading the charge for change are Atlanta, JFK, and LAX, the largest in the USA. Changes to the rules only apply to domestic flights within USA’s national territory.

Currently, 3-1-1 prohibits carrying on the following:

• Sharp objects, items with blades 4”+ 

• Strike-anywhere matches, flammable liquids and gels, lighter fluid 

• Swiss Army knives 

• Self-defense sprays. Pepper spray permitted in checked luggage only. Bear spray not allowed in checked or carryon bags

• Drills, power tools, crowbars, hammers, mallets  

• Firearms or replicas of firearms, ammunition, slingshots, fireworks, all weapons 

• Sporting equipment like baseball bats, golf clubs, hiking poles 

• Camping gear containing flammable liquids 

• Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (recalled in 2016 after several phones overheated and exploded) 

• Screwdrivers 7”+ 

• Medical thermometers with mercury.
